3D Printing 100% ROI due to everything being manufactured in-house

“3D printing has also given us the control to create and monitor our designs from start to finish, by allowing us to manufacture the products ourselves and maintaining the printing environment in the best way possible. We can more efficiently calculate print time, while keeping the quality at the highest standard. This is something we could not achieve if we outsourced. In addition, we can monitor our own carbon footprint which is incredibly important to us.”

“We are the proud creator of the ORIGINAL mounting solution for the Sky Q Series, BT Home Hubs, EE Smart Hubs, Plusnet & Suunto Watches. These mounting solutions were created purely from our own need to mount our Smart Hub and have gone on to be our best-selling products. To date, we have sold over 10,000 products to happy customers across UK & Europe.

In addition, we have had the pleasure of creating bespoke products & prototypes for the US Air Force and British Superbikes. Being able to offer our own products in addition to providing a bespoke design & creation service & prototyping gives us the freedom to design and explore a whole range of possibilities when it comes to 3D Printing.”

Pengraff UK – Introduction

Are a small team with over 15 years Design and Mechanical Engineering experience which gives them a greater insight into the needs of their customers. As a small team, they have the advantage of being able to work more closely together to come up with innovative ideas, directly engaging with customers to gain feedback which then allows them to improve and develop their designs and enables Pengraff UK to push boundaries when creating new products.

As a new startup – it is incredibly important to Pengraff UK during these times of environmental change to contribute in any way they can to ensure the World stays a beautiful place to live. They do this by using suppliers that share the same passion and drive for sustainable 3D printing as them, and they create everything in the UK themselves with no outsourcing, which also allows them to have stricter control over their printing environment and maintains the highest quality for products.

“Our mission is to create and provide innovative and affordable solutions and products while being mindful of the environment and continuing to deliver the exceptional customer service and high-quality products that Pengraff UK has become renowned for. We have an aim to grow and expand our product range further into other sectors by 2025 while continuing to raise awareness of the endless possibilities that 3D printing technology provides.”

Challenge

We had a bookshelf – its only purpose was to hold our BT Home Hub and it was not practical. We searched in-store and online but there were no wall mounting solutions available specifically for the hub. Requesting a bespoke design and manufacture of a product was not cost-effective as this would need to be made by a larger company who would prefer to mass produce or need to use injection moulding when we only required one mounting solution at an affordable price.

Solution

We purchased an Ultimaker 2+ and began designing our own solution for our BT Home Hub. After a few trial prints, we came up with the finished product and it worked perfectly. We then considered whether there was a demand for this product and floated the idea on eBay. We sold several and were soon inundated with requests for mounting solutions for other TV / Internet / Telecommunications equipment where no alternative was available online or on the high-street.

Results

The business began to evolve from a simple product we created to solve an every-day problem. We now have two printers, Registered Designs and a great range of products being sold across the UK and Europe, including our best-selling wall mount for the Sky Q Mini which features our trademark Lokt! Technology – something unique to us, which was created as a securing device to hold the box in place once mounted. We now have over 10,000 products in peoples’ homes and businesses, which still takes our breath away!

Knowing that we were the original creator for this range of mounting solutions when there were no other options on the market is something we are incredibly proud of. We continue to receive requests to design new products which we welcome, and with the success of our mounting solutions; we can look to diversify and expand into other areas in the coming years.

Costs and Savings

3D Printing has provided 100% ROI, due to the fact we do everything ourselves. We can create and rigorously test our products in-house prior to market release, which means we are not paying another company to create prototypes for us, nor are we paying out for transport costs during the testing /manufacturing process to larger manufacturers who may outsource overseas or use more expensive methods & materials such as injection moulding and metal. Crucially, creating our own products in-house also helps minimise our carbon footprint. 3D printing gives us greater control and means we can more efficiently create, test and release our products to market which in turn, means we keep costs down for our customers. We have also found that it gives greater customer satisfaction as they can speak directly to the product creators.
