How It Works

The Fuel3D Scanify uses a unique approach to combine different methods of collecting imaging data. Photometric data is measured using a strong flash, which provides color and shape feedback. Normally this would not be possible in a handheld device as the imaging device and target would need to be stationary, but this is resolved by using an optical target to track movement. While this provides accurate X and Y data, depth information is not highly accurate. This is overcome through the use of two cameras and lenses, which allows the scanner to accurately calculate depth by using optical triangulation. These images are then merged into one high-resolution, full color 3D image.

 

Point and Shoot, not Sit and Wait

Most consumer 3D scanners that are currently available use time-intensive reflective processes. But even with such a complex imaging process, the Fuel3D Scanify is very straightforward to use. Simply place the optical target on the object to be scanned, line up the object using the viewfinder, and press a button to capture the image. Processing will take roughly 20-30 seconds. The Fuel3D software generates a 3D color data file and allows some basic editing functionality prior to export, including trimming of unnecessary areas, adjusting the resolution for export (in turn reducing the polygon number for easier handling), and exporting in commonly used 3D file formats.
